My New Eee PC
It’s been awhile since I’ve posted on here, but Jim and I thought it’d be a good idea to write about my recent purchase of an Asus Eee PC. This laptop, or should I say Netbook, is revolutionizing how I use a computer.
In the past, I’ve been very adamant about having a panel on the top AND bottom of my linux desktop, but the Eee hasĀ changed the way I approach the desktop. Ubuntu Eee (soon to be called Easy Peasy) is the distro of choice for these netbooks as it makes use of your netbook’s hardware more than the default linux distro Xandros. With Xandros, it almost forces you to use the web browser for everything and gives you only a few icons to use for desktop apps. With Ubuntu Eee, I can do almost everything a top of the line laptop can do. After all, the Eee I purchased for $250 has a dual-core atom processor with 1gb of ram (upgradable to 2gb). This is a steal for such a machine. Every application opens in fullscreen since the screen is small, there isn’t much reason to open windows at a smaller size. The taskbar has icons of each app open so that I can switch back and forth quickly. Here’s a screenshot to show more clearly.
I plan on writing an article on how these netbooks can benefit even the user who isn’t extremely proficient with computers at theraytownpost.com in the coming weeks.
For more info, visit Asus’ website. There are many new models of the Eee and they start at a very affordable price of $250. Also, brands such as Acer offer similar netbooks at a decent price. 2009 is the year of the netbook!
