Site search with style!

By Jim Edwards • Mar 10th, 2008 • Category: Software Pick of the week, Web Design

oogle does it again! Sitewide church searching is a great benefit. These days most of us have multiple websites and it’s crucial that we offer a search that can cross multiple domains. If your anything like us it’s been a real struggle to find a cost effective method of allowing your users to search all your domains from one location.

I recently ran across Google custom search which not only gave us the ability to search across all of our domains, but gave us that custom look that we really wanted. When we first built the new kcbt.org site it was a simple 6 page site with only one domain. Now kcbt.org alone is 250+ pages and we have over 8 domain names. Giving our users the ability to search all these domains became ever more required. (Especially when my wife took over the Connections ministry, for visitors who want information about our church). It didn’t take to many questions as we got ready for bed each night before I realized I was going to need to find a solution to this problem quickly.

Google custom search has given us the ability to search our main site, our Head Pastors blog, our newsletter, and several other sites all at one location, all while maintaining the look and feel that our users had grown to love, or at least accept!

I’m sure some may argue that this shouldn’t qualify as a Software of the week, but for those of us in the Web Development field, this is a gold mind! And besides in a Web2.0 world the line between website and software is pretty darn thin.
