It’s a Buzzword

By Jim Edwards • Feb 6th, 2008 • Category: website of the week

buzzwordLooking for a good online document creation tool with a little more…eh pizzaz then Google documents? You might like to take a look at Adobe’s new project called Buzzword. Buzzword pretty much does everything that Google documents does, but it does it in a much cooler fashion. So why am I mentioning a product that can do what Google already does. Two reason:

  1. Buzzword will allow you to save and open documents to the .docx platform.
  2. Buzzword allows you to post comments on specific parts of yoru document for review by you or your peers.

So the real question is, Is this enought to move your online documents from google to buzzword. That decision needs to probably be left to the individual, but what’s more important here is the outcome of what buzzword is doing. By decentralizing the online document world from Google, we hold the potential to create an enviroment where functionality begin to drive online document functionality. This is a great thing for all of us considering the effect it could have on the retail document processing market. In 5-10 years we could find the idea of paying for a document processor as crazy!

  1. There are some great uses for sharing docs that online docs like this provide. That said, I will always like relying on my local client program as first choice as I will always be able to have a richer, faster experience on my computer than view my internet connection. Worse still, I’ve spent some time this week with my broadband internet connection not working and I would be in deep trouble if everything I needed was “in the sky” beyond my reach.

  2. I totally agree, it’s hard for me to keep my work “in the cloud” but I definitely think that dynamic of document sharing and group access makes online docs a must, and I cant’ help but wonder if we won’t see a shift in this thinking as the next generation evolves in a social network rich internet.
